Charles Bridge is a national monument and considered to be one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. It connects Mala Strana with Staromestska. It replaced the even older Judith Bridge, which was destroyed several times by floods. Legends say eggs were added to the mortar to make it strong, and it may have worked – the bridge has never been swept away again. The auspicious time of 1357, July 9th at 5:31 in the morning was chosen as the optimal moment to begin building a bridge because these numbers formed the sequence 135797531, a palindrome symbolic of a sturdy bridge. The 30 statues didn’t start appearing until 1683, the last being added as recently as 1928.
