A record number of more than 8,400 runners lined up (an increase of nearly 35% over last year) to take part in a race that proved to be one of the biggest Czech celebrations since the Velvet Revolution. Included in the starting line-up was the retired Czech football superstar, Pavel Nedved, as well as the Prague Mayor, Pavel Bem and several other well known faces. As the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, took to the podium to fire the starting gun, the atmosphere was electric, with thousands of spectators crowding the start to cheer the runners on. Prague International Marathon (“PIM”), the organizers of the race, had assembled an exceptional field of elite athletes for this year’s race in an effort to retain the IAAF Road Race Gold Label that it was awarded at the end of 2009, and to improve upon the event records of 1:00:07 for the men and 1:09:03 for the women, both set last year. Included in the lineup were Wilson Chebet and Joseph Meregu of Kenya, both of whom had already run under the magical one hour time limit this year, as well as the Ethiopians Yemane Tsegay, who finished fourth in the marathon in the World Championships in Berlin and Dereje Debele, and the young Kenyan, Joel Kemboi. Although the temperature (10 degrees centigrade) at the start was almost ideal for a fast race, a strong wind buffeted the runners as they made their way across the bridge and along the Vltava River. At the 10 kilometer mark, reached in 28:26, the leaders were running easily together but soon after Joel Kemboi took off and broke up the pack with Wilson Chebet leading the chase. Kemboi continued to push the pace and by 18 kilometers he had opened a 15 second lead and was still running easily within the one hour pace, but the headwinds coming off of the river proved too strong and he slowed slightly to finish in 1:00:09, only two seconds off the event record, despite the very difficult conditions. The pre-race favorite Wilson Chebet finished second in 1:01:26 and Yemane Tsegay was third in 1:01:37. The women’s race followed similar lines as Rose Kosgei and Monica Wangari Kanyata stayed with the pace setters for the first 10 kilometers and then Kosgei, feeling the pace slowing, pushed ahead at 12 kilometers and never looked back on her way to a 1:09:57 victory. She was followed by a strong finishing Florence Jepko Chepsoi in 1:10:28 as Kanyata fell back to third in 1:10:33. Outstanding results from the home team included a time of 1:06:57 from the 41 year old Robert Stefko, and 1:15:52 from the first Czech woman home, Petra Kaminkova. Other exceptional performances included those of the blind runner from Kenya, Frances Karanja, in 1:11:52, the Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bem, in 1:36:52, and the footballer Pavel Nedved in 1:49:44.
