Leírás | This year’s edition of the Warsaw Marathon has witnessed the breaking of the Polish record by Kenyan John Sammy Kibet. The Marathon also set a new record of its own thanks to the number of participants —4,175 runners from nearly 50 different countries. In a departure from previous marathons, this year the race began at Plac na Rozdrożu. Already before 8:00 am runners preparing to participate and fans that would be rooting for them began gathering there. The race started at precisely 9:00 am. A dozen-odd minutes earlier a group of favourites of this year’s marathon set out. The traditionally 42,195-metre race led through Ujazdowski Park, on through Łazienki Park and thence along the streets of Warsaw’s Mokotów district including Czerniakowska, Przyczółkowa, Nowoursynowska, Sobieskiego, Belwederska and Gagarina to the finish line in Agrykola Park near Ujazdów Palace. Apart from the traditional age categories, the runners competed in professional groups. Along the way, there appeared bank employees, lawyers, journalists, education staff, state clerks and many others. It took not too much longer than two hours for the best runners to complete the marathon. The winner, John Sammy Kibet of Kenya, completed the race in two hours eight minutes and seventeen seconds. That was a Warsaw Marathon record which also exceeded the Polish record for that distance. The Kenyan was therefore awarded a special prize, a Volvo Xc60 motorcar. The best Pole, Artur Kozłowski, was the fourth to cross the finish line with a result of two hours and fourteen minutes. In the women’s classification, the winner was Ukrainian Svetlana Stanko with a result of two hours and thirty-one minutes. John Sammy Kibet said he was very happy not only because of his victory but above all because he had succeeded in improving his life’s record. The best of the Poles, 26-year-old Artur Kozłowski, also set his life’s record. He revealed that over the final two kilometres of the marathon he had to really ‘struggle against himself’. This year’s 33rd edition of the Warsaw Marathon commemorated Piotr Nurowski, the president of the Polish Olympic Committee who had perished in the Smoleńsk air disaster of 10th April 2010. To memorialise the late POC president, an Olympic race over a distance of eight kilometres was held ten minutes after the start of the Warsaw Marathon. Among those participating in the event were well-known Polish sportsmen including many-time Olympic race walking champion Robert Korzeniowski, Olympic champion wrestler Paweł Nastula and Olympic gymnastics champion Leszek Blanik. An interesting accent of the event was a contest for the best costume. A group of runners dressed as Greek hoplites directly alluding to the BC 490 Battle of Marathon and the origin of the marathon race itself attracted particular attention.
