28th Florence Marathon Firenze Maraton

Leírás FLORENCE MARATHON 2011, A NEW STARTING LINE
The new starting line will be in the center of town, very near the arrival point: easier logistics

The Marathon will run on perfectly flat roads, and will be technically more spectacular

Florence Marathon becomes more technical and much more spectacular. And this is the great novelty that will change the aspect of the 2011 race on 27 November (for the 28th year running). The starting line is being relocated to the center of town and will be much nearer the arrival point. This year, departure from Lungarno Pecori Giraldi, from the wide open space in front of the barracks of the Carabinieri (and no longer from Piazzale Michelangelo, as in the past).

The Organizing Committee, together with the technical office of Florence Town Council has given this matter a lot of thought and come up with this choice that embraces many factors and offers many advantages, the two most important being that of avoiding the difference in altitude (and thus allowing the course to take place on entirely flat ground), and the simplification of logistics.

SIMPLER LOGISTICS
The over 10.000 participants, in fact, once they have finished the race and arrived in Piazza Santa Croce, will find the area of assistance (and also the cloakroom area where they can collect their belongings) very nearby, just 500 meters as the bird flies, as last year. This is the same area where they will have deposited their bags before the start, so they will then be able to reach their hotels, cars, etc. without having to take a shuttle bus over the river or walk or run even further after the race.

A VERY TECHNICAL MARATHON
The technical aspect of the race has greatly improved, allowing it to take place on entirely flat roads, no hills, nor any type of slope that might create difficulties and make the course uneven. No more the downhill start, therefore, that may in the past have upset the rhythm at the beginning, not to mention problems regarding validation (up until a couple of years ago) because of the difference of level as specified in the new regulations that had come out in the meantime. Then, this year, participants will be able to avoid the tortuous “ toboggan” down Viale dei Colli, and will turn straightaway into the wide tree-lined avenues, after which they will head toward the Cascine Park, and subsequently return to the center and the triumphant arrival in Piazza Santa Croce.
The route by and large, apart from this variation, will be substantially the same as before as it has been amply tested, and the difference will be compensated by adding on a couple of kilometers inside the Cascine Park.

A SUPERMARATHON
Florence Marathon, therefore, after this variation will be even more attractive, since it will be a race that will follow a “ring” route along flat surfaces, with departure and arrival points very close to each other. And what's more, both in the center of the one of the most beautiful towns in the world, with its monuments and works of art. For the whole length of its 42 km and 195 meters, the course will be technologically more fluid. No narrow spots or bottlenecks during the first part of the race when the leading groups are still numerous. This innovation should really contribute to “squaring the circle” and making Florence the home of one of the most attractive marathons in Italy and in the world. It is already the second in Italy as regards number of participants (after Rome).
